Self Harm, Suicide and Young People

Background:
This is a half-day training aiming to increase practitioners’ understanding and awareness about self-harming and suicidal thoughts and behaviours in children and young people. The course aims to increase compassionate and effective responding to such presentations, through the development of relationships and interactions which can help to facilitate communication, validation and alternative coping skills. It also aims to advance professional knowledge and skills in risk assessment, safeguarding and safety planning when working with self-harm and suicidality along with the promotion of multi-agency working.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the training it is hoped that practitioners will have:
- Gained a greater awareness and understanding about self-harm and suicide in children and young people
- Increased confidence and skills in working safely and compassionately with children and young people with self-harming or suicidal thoughts or behaviours
- Increased confidence and skills in risk assessment and safety planning, including working with families and partner agencies in order to support young people who self-harm or who have suicidal thoughts and behaviours.
